Background of the Study
Traditional media, including radio, television, and print, have long been integral to communication strategies in rural areas, where access to digital platforms may be limited. In Gombe Local Government Area (LGA) of Gombe State, agricultural development plays a crucial role in the economic and social well-being of the population. Traditional media has been recognized for its potential to educate farmers, disseminate agricultural innovations, and foster knowledge exchange that can improve farming practices and productivity (Ayuba & Bala, 2023). Media channels such as radio broadcasts and agricultural programming on television are pivotal in reaching rural farmers who may not have access to modern communication technologies. Traditional media allows for the communication of essential information on weather patterns, market prices, government agricultural policies, and modern farming techniques, all of which are necessary for the sustainable development of agriculture in the region (Bawa et al., 2024). Despite its widespread use, the full extent of the impact of traditional media on agricultural development in Gombe LGA has not been sufficiently examined. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how traditional media channels influence agricultural practices and development in Gombe LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While traditional media is a common tool for agricultural development in Gombe LGA, its effectiveness in enhancing agricultural productivity remains unclear. Many farmers in the region face challenges such as limited access to advanced technologies and insufficient exposure to modern agricultural practices. Although radio and television programs are designed to inform and educate, the real impact of these media on improving agricultural techniques, increasing crop yields, and boosting farmers' incomes has not been adequately studied. Furthermore, traditional media may not be tailored to the specific needs and realities of farmers in Gombe LGA. This study aims to investigate how traditional media impacts agricultural development in the area, providing insights into its role in shaping the future of agriculture and identifying areas for improvement in media outreach strategies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of traditional media in promoting agricultural development in Gombe LGA.
To evaluate the effectiveness of radio and television programs in disseminating agricultural knowledge to farmers.
To examine the impact of traditional media on farmers' knowledge and adoption of modern agricultural practices in Gombe LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How does traditional media influence agricultural development in Gombe LGA?
What is the effectiveness of radio and television programs in educating farmers in Gombe LGA?
How does traditional media contribute to the adoption of modern agricultural practices among farmers in Gombe LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Traditional media has a significant impact on agricultural development in Gombe LGA.
Radio and television programs are effective in disseminating agricultural knowledge to farmers in Gombe LGA.
Traditional media influences the adoption of modern agricultural practices in Gombe LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in that it will provide insights into the effectiveness of traditional media as a tool for agricultural development in Gombe LGA. By understanding the role of media in influencing agricultural practices, policymakers, NGOs, and media houses can develop strategies to better utilize traditional media for educating farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural development. Furthermore, this study will contribute to the broader discourse on the role of traditional media in rural development, offering lessons for other regions with similar socio-economic contexts.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of traditional media in agricultural development within Gombe LGA. It will specifically examine the impact of radio and television programs on farmers in the region. The research is limited to Gombe LGA and does not include other LGAs in Gombe State or other states in Nigeria.
